El Siglo de Oro or Spain’s Golden Age was when most of Spain’s exceptional masters came about; they have composed some of the most brilliant paintings in the world. One Spanish painter that made a clear distinction of them all is Diego Velasquez; he became one of Spain’s highly important and most admired artist during his generation. This master is truly one of a kind in terms of style and paintings; he is a realist painter and his vision in his art is something that was not yet common during his time.

Much of Diego Velasquez’s childhood was not something out of the ordinary; he raised with five other siblings and was the oldest of the brood. Quite exceptionally, he was able to initiate his lessons with Francisco Pacheco at the age of eleven; Pacheco was also regarded as a master painter and he helped develop Diego Velasquez to become a certified painter at a very young age. Eventually, Diego Velasquez fell in love with and married his master’s daughter and for a while, he supported his family by creating paintings with religious themes which he sold to churches; he also made paintings for taverns, and offered his services as a portraitist.

Many amazing pieces launched Diego Velasquez’s career as a painter; he is one of the few Spanish painters who could really be called a master in his artistry because of the many masterpieces he produced in his lifetime. The Surrender of Breda is an example of his internationally famous paintings which he made after he met the Marques de Spinola; it is said that when the painting was shown to Spinola, he was so amazed at how Velasquez was able to expertly paint an expression of emotions through realism which was only beginning to gain popularity during those times. Another artwork that Velasquez made was the Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; it is known to be a great masterpiece of all time and acknowledged as most sought after painting around the world.

These are only but a number of the masterpieces and narrations about Spain’s Diego Velasquez; a brilliant Master in the world of painting, that deserves honor and is truly ahead of his own time.
